Als of de GOP nog niet genoeg problemen had komt daar nu het schandaal rondom de Republikeinse gouverneur Mark Sanford bij. De voorzitter van de Republican National Committee (RNC) Michael Steele noemde de affaire van Sanford “one more disappointment in failed leadership”, maar zei dat de inwoners van South Carolina moeten beslissen of Sanford moet aftreden. “My view on it is, here we go again, you have one more disappointment in failed leadership”, aldus Steele in een interview tegenover radio station WWJ in Detroit. Steele zei dat gekozen politici “are held to a different standard” en dat “they need to behave themselves.” Steel deed geen uitspraak of hij vindt dat Sanford moet aftreden, die beslissing is uiteindelijk aan de inwoners van South Carolina. “The Republican Party didn’t elect Sanford, the people of South Carolina did, and they’ll be the ones to decide whether or not he stays or goes”, aldus de voorzitter van de RNC. “It’s their vote that put him in power, so it will be their call for his resignation that will remove him, or their call to say that he can stay that will keep him there.”

Het schandaal rondom Sanford is niet iets wat de Republikeinse partij kan gebruiken. De partij is op zoek naar een nieuwe richting en koers en zo’n schandaal en levert de partij nog meer schade op. Maar het is niet iets nieuws. De Democratische gouverneur van New York, Eliot Spitzer, had een affaire met een escort girl en trad af en de voormalige Democratische presidentskandidaat John Edwards moest ook op biechten dat hij vreemd was gegaan. Zelfs president Bill Clinton zat aan een andere vrouw. Niemand kijkt er meer van op. Het is natuurlijk wel erg dom, als politicus weet je dat het vroeg of laat uit komt.
