Binnen de Democratische partij roept het besluit van Obama om meer troepen te sturen en de troepen vanaf 2011 terug te trekken gemengde reacties op. De Democratische senator van Californië, Barbara Boxer zei: “I support the president’s mission and exit strategy for Afghanistan, but I do not support adding more troops because there are now 200,000 American, NATO and Afghan forces fighting roughly 20,000 Taliban and less than 100 al Qaeda.” De vice-fractievoorzitter van de Democraten in de Senaat, Dick Durbin van Illinois, zei: “President Obama asked for time to make his decision on a new policy in Afghanistan. I am going to take some time to think through the proposal he presented tonight.” De Democratische senator van North Carolina en lid van de Armed Services Committee van de Senaat, Kay R. Hagan: “I am encouraged by President Obama’s announcement that he will send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. I am hopeful that he will be able to engage our NATO allies to supplement this effort and to continue assisting in the growth of Afghanistan’s security forces to protect their population”, aldus Hagan. “I oppose sending 30.000 additional American troops to Afghanistan because I am not persuaded that it is indispensable in our fight against Al Qaeda”, aldus senator Arlen Specter van Pennsylvania. Er zijn dus gemengde gevoelens en reacties op het besluit van Obama. De onenigheid binnen de Democratische partij kan tot politieke problemen leiden voor Obama en dat kan hij niet gebruiken juist nu hij de steun van de Amerikaanse bevolking nodig heeft voor zijn plan.
