De onafhankelijk senator Joe Lieberman van Connecticut zei afgelopen week tegenover CNN dat hij “is moving in the direction” om voor het wetsvoorstel voor de hervorming van gezondheidszorg van de Democraten te stemmen, als de provisies voor vroege Medicare, mensen tot 55 jaar en de public health insurance option uit het voorstel worden gehaald. Lieberman ontkende dat hij tegen is omdat hij in 2006 de Democratische voorverkiezing verloor zoals liberale critici zeggen. “Well that’s just poppycock”, aldus Lieberman tegenover Dana Bash van CNN. “….If I had any sense of vendetta against the Democratic Party I wouldn’t be in the Democratic caucus today. I’m an independent Democrat.” Lieberman zei dat zijn positie is gebaseerd op beleid en niet op politiek.

De onafhankelijke senator van Connecticut zei dat hij nog niet heeft besloten of hij voor de wet stemt. “Here’s what I’d say. I’ve always wanted to be able to say yes to health care reform. But there were some parts of this bill, public option, Medicare buy-in that I thought would essentially lead to a government takeover of health care in America, which I’m against, because I think it would reduce quality and increase prices and certainly raise the debt, and taxes”, aldus Lieberman. “I’m moving very much in the direction of saying yes, pending just seeing what I’ve been told is happening with the bill.”

Lieberman zei verder dat hij niet uitsluit dat hij in 2012 als Republikein meedoet aan de verkiezingen voor de Senaat. Lieberman zei tegenover CNN: “I don’t know what I’ll run as, I like being an independent. So that’s definitely a possibility. But I’d say all options are open….”, aldus Lieberman. “It’s unlikely I’d run as a Republican, but I wouldn’t foreclose any possibility. I think the more likely thing is that I’d run as an independent because that’s what I am.”
