President Obama en Organizing for America (OFA), de organisatie die vrijwilligers mobiliseert en supporters van president Obama nieuwsbrieven stuurt en ze oproept om actie te ondernemen om te zorgen dat bijvoorbeeld de hervorming van de Amerikaanse gezondheidszorg wordt aangenomen, riep afgelopen week Amerikanen op om onder andere via Facebook een brief naar hun lokale krant te schrijven waarom zij vinden dat health care reform nodig is. OFA schreef onder andere dit in de nieuwsbrief naar de supporters:

The conclusion is clear: This isn’t a problem we can kick down the road for another decade — or even another year. We need to pass health reform now. We’re incredibly close. But too many in Washington are now saying that we should delay or give up on reform entirely. So we need to make it crystal clear that Americans understand the stakes for our economy and our lives, and that we want action.

Subject: Why I support the Health Care Bill
Studies have shown that the actual cost per person in health care has risen to approximately $2.5 trillion just in 2009. That comes down to $8,047 per person! This is outragous! If we don’t do something now, you can imagine that costs will probabaly double by the year 2020.
 
We are closer than ever to passing true health care reform. I cannot urge Congress enough to finish this job! No more delays – no more excuses. We need to stand up for our President. Obama deserves our support. He was elected fair and square, and we should give this reform a chance. That’s why he was elected in the first place – to bring about change. I’m ready for it – are you?”
