Steun Biden voor Specter helpt niet

Vice-president Joe Biden gaf na het verlies van senator Arlen Specter in de Democratische voorverkiezing in Pennsylvania een verklaring uit waar hij afgevaardigde Joe Sestak feliciteerde en Specter bedankte. “Arlen Specter is one of my closest friends. He has served Pennsylvania with determination, wisdom, and skill for many years. I was proud to play a role in his return to the Democratic Party; his votes to pass the Recovery Act and health insurance reform were courageous and critical to our success. I look forward to working with him during the rest of this year, and remaining in close contact with him after his term in Washington is finished”, aldus Biden. “I spoke to Joe Sestak last night and congratulated him on his impressive victory. He will make a great candidate in the fall, and a wonderful United States Senator. I look forward to campaigning for him in Pennsylvania and celebrating his victory in November”, aldus Biden.

Geld voor november

De National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) haalde 4,4 miljoen dollar op in de maand april en heeft nu 17 miljoen dollar in kas, zo maakte de NRSC afgelopen week bekend. “As we move closer to Election Day, it’s increasingly clear that President Obama’s big government, big spending agenda is putting more and more Democrat Senate seats in play. This makes it even more important to ensure that all of our candidates have the resources to run and win in November”, aldus de directeur van de NRSC, Rob Jesmer, in een verklaring. De NRSC meldde ook dat het geen schulden heeft en meldde dat het 5,14 miljoen in maart ophaalde.

Cuomo for gouverneur

De minister van Justitie van de staat New York, Andrew Cuomo, maakte afgelopen week bekend dat hij meedoet aan de gouverneursverkiezingen in New York in november. En zijn campagne is eenvoudig. “My campaign is this simple: I represent the people of the great state of New York and we want our government back”, aldus Cuomo in een video. De huidige gouverneur van New York, de Democraat David Paterson, maakte in maart bekend dat hij niet voor een nieuwe termijn gaat. Paterson werd gouverneur nadat Eliot Spitzer in 2008 aftrad na een seksschandaal. Van Cuomo, ook een Democraat en de zoon van voormalige gouverneur van New York, Mario Cuomo, die drie termijnen gouverneur was, werd verwacht dat hij zich kandidaat zou stellen. “Our state government in Albany is disreputable and discredited. New York State is upside down and backwards. High taxes and low performance. The New York State government was at one time a national model. Now unfortunately it’s a national disgrace”, aldus Cuomo. “We must use this moment to reorganize the government, reform its ethics, and restructure its finances to solve the problems we have ignored for too long.” Lees meer hier.

Oliecommissie

President Obama benoemde afgelopen week de voormalige Democratische senator van Florida, Bob Graham, en de voormalige manager van de Environmental Protection Agency, William K. Reilly om de nieuwe commissie te leiden die moet onderzoeken hoe toekomstige olierampen, zoals die nu plaats vindt in de Golf van Mexico, kan worden voorkomen. In de commissie zitten zowel Democraten als Republikeinen “[…] I signed an executive order establishing the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. While there are a number of ongoing investigations, including an independent review by the National Academy of Engineering, the purpose of this Commission is to consider both the root causes of the disaster and offer options on what safety and environmental precautions we need to take to prevent a similar disaster from happening again”, aldus president Obama in zijn wekelijkse toespraak.
