President Obama neemt geen blad voor de mond als het aankomt op kritiek op de conservatieve televisiezender Fox News. Obama noemde Fox News “destructive to [America’s] long-term growth.” In een interview met het tijdschrift Rolling Stone vergelijkt Obama de kabelnieuwszender met de kranten die in handen waren van William Randolph Hearst aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw “that unabashedly pushed the media titan’s own political views.” “You had folks like Hearst who used their newspapers very intentionally to promote their viewpoints. I think Fox is part of that tradition – it is part of the tradition that has a very clear, undeniable point of view”, aldus Obama.

Medewerkers van het Witte Huis hebben het al langer op Fox News voorzien. Vorig jaar viel het Witte Huis Fox News hard aan en noemde het de zender “opinion journalism masquerading as news” (zie ook het artikel Het Witte Huis vs. Fox News op dit weblog). De toenmalige directeur Communicatie van het Witte Huis, Anita Dunn, zei toen dat Fox News “operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party” en top adviseur Valerie Jarret noemde Fox “clearly biased.” Lees meer hier.
