Zakenman Donald Trump, die een serieus nadenkt om een poging te gaan doen om de Republikeinse nominatie te winnen, maar volgens sommige politici totaal geen kans maakt (zie bericht Geen kans voor Trump), zegt dat hij twijfels heeft of president Obama wel in de VS is geboren. Het lijkt er dus op of Trump ook een zogenoemde “birther” is.

In een interview met ABC zei Trump dat hij het raar vindt dat “nobody knew” Obama als een jong kind in Hawaï. Dat klopt voor een gedeelte, want Obama groeiende ook voor een deel op in Indonesië.

“Let me tell you, I’m a really smart guy. I was a really good student at the best school in the country. The reason I have a little doubt, just a little, is because he grew up and nobody knew him”, aldus  Trump in het interview. “If I got the nomination, if I decide to run, you may go back and interview people from my kindergarten. They’ll remember me. Nobody comes forward. Nobody knows who he is until later in his life. It’s very strange. The whole thing is very strange”, aldus de zakenman.

In het interview met ABC zei Trump ook hij bereid is om 600 miljoen van zijn eigen geld te gebruiken voor zijn campagne en gaf een mening over zijn potentiële tegenstanders. Over de potentiële kandidaten zei Trump het volgende:

• Mitt Romney? “He doesn’t resonate”, aldus Trump.
• Tim Pawlenty? “I don’t think he will captivate the voters.”
• Jon Huntsman? “When you work for somebody else, as he has worked for Barack Obama, you don’t leave and run against that person. It’s very disloyal”, aldus de zakenman.
• Mike Huckabee? “I really like him. He’s the kind of a guy that maybe could really get some votes”, aldus Trump.
• Sarah Palin? “She did fine as the governor. I think, personally, she made a tragic mistake when she left early. I think she’s more qualified than Barack Obama was when he became president.”
• Newt Gingrich? “You know why I like Gingrich? He just joined my club in New York”, aldus Trump.

Trump geeft dus aan dat hij wel degelijk denkt dat hij een goede kans maakt, ondanks dat hij in tegenstelling tot de andere potentiële kandidaten geen politieke ervaring heeft. Lees meer hier.
