De Democratische fractievoorzitter van de Senaat, Harry Reid, blijft felle kritiek uiten op de Tea Party beweging en zei dat de voorzitter van het Huis van Afgevaardigden, John Boehner, bang is voor de protestbeweging. “The answer is yes”, aldus Reid toen hij werd gevraagd of de prominente Republikeinen “afraid of the movement” zijn. “The Tea Party is dictating a lot that goes on in the Republican leadership in the House.” Reid deed zijn uitspraken in het programma “Face the Nation” van CBS.

Reid zei ook dat de beweging zeer impopulair is binnen conservatieve kringen en voegde daar aan toe: “The Republican leadership in the House has to make a decision: whether they are going to do the right thing for the country or do the right thing for the Tea Party.”

Vervolgens nam Reid de lage opkomst van een rally in Washington D.C. op de hak. “They didn’t have thousands of people there, they didn’t have hundreds of people. They had tens of people”, aldus de Democraat uit Nevada. “The Tea Party is not looked at very strongly across the country – the only attention they get is in the House of Representatives.”

Het is niet de eerste keer dat Reid kritiek uit op de Tea Party beweging die verantwoordelijk is dat er nu Republikeinen in het Congres zitten die anti-overheid zijn. Vorige maand zei Reid tegen journalisten dat “the country doesn’t care much about the Tea Party” en dat de Republikeinse partij zich niet moet verbinden aan een conservatieve beweging die alleen uit is op bezuinigingen op de landelijke begroting en tegen de overheid is. “The Tea Party’s unpopularity continues to grow”, zei Reid toen. “Because the American people sees how unreasonable they are. So let me reiterate my hope that the Republican leadership recognizes they can’t continue to be pulled to the right by the radical, unrealistic, unreasonable…faction: the Tea Party.”

Een recente peiling van CNN/Opinion Research Corporation gaf aan dat 32 procent van de ondervraagden een positief beeld heeft van de Tea Party beweging, 5 procent lager dan in december, terwijl 47 procent een negatief beeld heeft (zie bericht Impopulaire thee). Lees meer hier.
