De potentiële Republikeinse presidentskandidaat Rick Santorum was één van de vele kandidaten die de start van president Obama’s herverkiezingscampagne gebruikte als een platform om kritiek te uiten op de economische situatie onder president Obama.

“We can’t take four more years of the ‘change’ the Obama Administration has forced upon America”, aldus Santorum in een verklaring. “The only thing that has changed is the amount of our debt, the size of our government, the loss of our freedom, the fewer jobs for those wanting work, the diminished stature of America, and an expensive military commitment without a clear national security purpose.”

De voormalige senator van Pennsylvania, die door veel voorverkiezings- en caucus staten heeft gereisd, bekritiseerde ook de ‘successen’ van Obama. “The ‘progress we’ve made’ that the President refers to has nothing to do with improving the lives of Americans or providing a better future for the next generations. It is about moving an ideological agenda to grow the power of Washington over the average citizen”, aldus Santorum.

Voormalig gouverneur van Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, gebruikte Twitter om kritiek op Obama te uiten. Romney twitterde, “@barackobama I look forward to hearing details on your jobs plan, as do 14m unemployed Americans.”

Tim Pawlenty, de voormalige gouverneur van Minnesota, was de eerste die reageerde op de start van Obama’s herverkiezingscampagne met een video waarin hij zei dat een nieuwe president “is needed to take America in a new direction.”

En de voormalige voorzitter van het Huis, Newt Gingrich, zei tenslotte dat Obama probeert “to coerce and run over the American people” met zijn ‘fundraising machine.’ “I don’t believe he can raise enough money to hide from the American people”, aldus Gingrich die op bezoek was in New Hampshire. “I think frankly he’ll be a one-term president.”
