Toen er sprake van was dat een zogenoemde ‘government shutdown’ onvermijdelijk leek voerde Tea Party activisten de druk op. Honderden conservatieve activisten vlak bij Capitol Hill riepen afgelopen week: “Shut it down.” “It’s time for taxpayers to take back the government. And let’s shut it down for a few days. It’s not going to come to a catastrophic end”, aldus David Williams van de Taxpayer Protection Alliance. De Republikeinse afgevaardigde van Indiana, Mike Pence, steunde hen. “If liberals in the senate would rather play games in this process and force a government shutdown rather than accepting what is a small down payment on fiscal discipline, then we should just shut it down.”

Maar de Republikeinse afgevaardigde en Tea Party leveling, Michele Bachmann, was niet voor een ‘shutdown’, aldus CNN. Bachmann zei op Facebook dat als er geen deal is ook de congresleden niet betaald moeten worden. “I think we will see a resolution by Friday. I think in all likelihood it will happen”, aldus Bachmann. “A lot of us are concerned”, aldus Bachmann.

Sommige standpunten van de Tea Party activisten zijn tegengesteld. Activist John Oltsevig was gekleed als Revolutionary War patriot en zwaaide met een bord met “Shut ‘Er Down.” Maar hij zei tegen CNN dat het bord symbolisch was bedoeld. “I don’t want the government to shut down. I’m making a point. We need to get serious about cutting our budget”, aldus Oltsevig.
