Ze was zijn running mate tijdens de presidentsverkiezingen van 2008 en nu denkt senator John McCain dat Sarah Palin president Obama in 2012 kan verslaan.

“Of course she can. She can. Now, whether she will or not, whether she’ll even run or not, I don’t know”, aldus de senator van Arizona afgelopen week tegenover “Fox News Sunday.” “But she certainly is a major factor and I believe she can be very competitive.”

Hoewel McCain zei dat Palin inspirerend “great passion, particularly among the Republican faithful” is en hij zei dat het feit dat ze impopulair is komt door de aanvallen van de media. “I’ve never seen anyone as mercilessly attacked and relentlessly attacked as I have seen Sarah Palin in the last couple of years”, aldus McCain.

De publieke flirt van Palin om mee te doen aan de race om het Witte Huis lijkt serieus na dat Palin aankondigde per bus langs Amerikaanse historische plekken te gaan aan de oostkust en een aantal voorverkiezingstaten zal bezoeken. Palin lanceerde de “One Nation” bustournee, zoals de tournee heet, en noemde het een mogelijkheid om “to educate and energize Americans about our nation’s founding principles, in order to promote the fundamental restoration of America” (zie bericht Historische bustournee). Maar McCain zei dat de campagne “will be a roller coaster” voor dat de Republikeinen hun presidentiële kandidaat hebben.

Toen McCain werd gevraagd over de kansen van zijn rivaal in 2008, Mitt Romney, over het winnen van de GOP presidentiële nominatie, zei McCain dat Romney’s grootste probleem “Romneycare” is, de gezondheidswet die Romney invoerde als gouverneur van Massachusetts. “I think he realizes that and is trying to address it”, aldus de senator van Arizona. “Whether he will address it successfully or not, I don’t know. But he certainly has a good ground campaign in places like New Hampshire and others where he’s really – you know, having been around the block once is always more helpful for next time”, aldus McCain.

De kans dat Sarah Palin het Witte Huis wint is klein. Ze zal eerst de Republikeinse nominatie moeten winnen en dat is al een hele opgave. Palin is uiterst conservatief en om de nominatie te winnen zal ze ook gematigde Republikeinse kiezers voor zich moeten winnen en kandidaten als Tim Pawlenty en Mitt Romney moeten verslaan en dat wordt erg lastig.
