Een dag nadat de gouverneur van South Carolina, Mark Sanford toegaf dat hij een buitenechtelijke affaire heeft roept een krant in South Carolina de gouverneur op om af te treden. “Mark Sanford cannot navigate a deep and painful personal crisis and lead the state through its economic crisis at the same time”, aldus het redactionele commentaar in The Spartanburg Herald-Journal. “This kind of personal issue is consuming. It will be more than a distraction from his duties as governor, it will be a higher priority”, aldus de krant. De oproep komt nadat Republikeinse gouverneur toegaf dat hij vijf dagen (op kosten van de staat en die hij terug gaat betalen) in Argentinië was waar hij een vriendin had en zijn staf en zijn vrouw niet wisten waar hij was. “The Palmetto State needs an effective spokesman who can talk to potential employers and convince them of the benefits of doing business in South Carolina without having to answer questions about his personal life”, aldus het redactionele commentaar in de The Spartanburg Herald-Journal. Sanford treedt onmiddellijk af als voorzitter van de Republican Governors Association (RGA), maar Sanford zei dat hij niet aftreedt als gouverneur en hij gewoon weer aan het werk gaat.

Een tweede krant in South Carolina roept gouverneur Mark Sanford op om af te treden. Het redactionele commentaar van de Orangeburg Times en Democrat komt nadat Sanford toegaf een affaire te hebben met een vrouw uit Argentinië. “Sanford should exit not because of his personal problems but because in dealing with those problems, he has shown clearly that he cannot be an effective leader. The entire episode vividly illustrates irresponsibility and poor judgment. He could not have handled the situation worse”, aldus het commentaar in de krant. “Sanford decided Wednesday to step aside as leader of the Republican Governors Association. If he cannot be an effective leader of that organization, how can he expect to be effective as the state’s chief executive?” Sanford gaf aan dat hij aan blijft als gouverneur. ”He should not”, aldus de krant. Eerder riep de The Spartanburg Herald-Journal Sanford op om af te treden.
