De Republikeinse gouverneur van Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty, leverde afgelopen week kritiek op het volgens hem hoge prijskaartje van Obama’s ambitieuze plan om de nationale gezondheidszorg te hervormen. “The president said not long ago in an interview, quote-unquote, we are out of money”, aldus Pawlenty tegenover John King van CNN toen hem werd gevraagd of de Verenigde Staten wel op dit moment hervorming van de gezondheidszorg kunnen betalen. “With all due respect Mr. President, if we’re out of money, quit spending it”, aldus Pawlenty. En hoe komt het dat de VS zonder geld zit? De regering Bush heeft al dat geld opgemaakt. President Bush kwam in het Witte Huis met een begrotingsoverschot, acht jaar later en miljarden dollars armer die zijn uit gegeven aan twee oorlogen die niet kunnen worden gewonnen, zijn de VS inderdaad bijna failliet. Dus als Pawlenty zegt dat Obama geen geld meer moet uitgeven, moeten de Republikeinen eerst eens bij zichzelf te raden gaan waarom er geen geld meer is.

“And, so no, we can’t afford it. This is a nation that has got a debt load and a deficit load that is unsustainable. We’re going to have, in my view, the federal government debt crisis equivalent of the mortgage crisis within 20 years”, aldus de gouverneur van Minnesota. Pawlenty zei ook dat hij niet denkt dat de regering Obama serieus werkt om het uitgeven van federaal (lees: belasting) geld te beperken, terwijl de president wel de federale financiële situatie wil oplossen. Pawlenty uitte ook felle kritiek op het voorstel van de Democraten om een deel van de gezondheidszorg door de overheid te laten betalen. Een ziektekostenverzekering die de overheid betaalt (zie bericht: Senaat buigt zich over voorstel gezondheidszorg). “If you want to extend access, to people who are in need or at disadvantage, then give them some help directly – in the form of a voucher, in the form of a tax credit. And then give them good information about price and quality. And, at least for those who can function in the marketplace, let them go do that. That’s how you assist people in need who can’t afford health care”, aldus de gouverneur. The public option contemplated by some Democrats is “another example of the partial … nationalization of an industry”, aldus de Republikeinse gouverneur tegenover John King in het programma State of the Union van CNN. “Not unlike in the mortgage industry, the banking industry, the auto industry, now the health care industry. Soon you’ll see that in the energy industry. This is a pattern with this administration of government encroaching into the private market”, aldus Pawlenty.
