Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Hillary Clinton liet zich afgelopen week uit op een beleidsterrein waar zij niet verantwoordelijk voor is, namelijk Binnenlandse Zaken. En Clinton en deed een sterk populistische uitspraak. Tijdens een conferentie van de Brookings Institution over nationale veiligheid, gaf Clinton plotseling haar mening over de het belastingbeleid in de VS en zei ze dat “feels the rich are not paying their fair share. The rich are not paying their fair share in any nation that is facing the kind of employment issues [like the U.S.] – whether it’s individual, corporate or whatever the taxation forms are”, aldus Clinton en legde daarna nadrukkelijk uit dat dit haar mening is en niet die van de regering Obama. Clinton sprak dus op persoonlijke titel.

Clinton noemde Brazilië als voorbeeld van een land “long known for its high taxes, as a model of a successful economic policy. Brazil has the highest tax-to-GDP rate in the Western Hemisphere and guess what – they’re growing like crazy”, aldus de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken. “And the rich are getting richer, but they’re pulling people out of poverty. There is a certain formula there that used to work for us, until we abandoned it, to our regret in my opinion”, aldus Clinton.
