De tussentijdse verkiezingen in november biedt Tea Party activisten de kans om hun favoriete kandidaten voor het Congres te kiezen, zoals Sharron Angle en Rand Paul. Maar als die kandidaten daadwerkelijk naar Washington komen dan is er wellicht een “Tea Party Caucus” die hen begroet en hen een warm welkom geeft.

Tea Party lieveling, de Republikeinse afgevaardigde van Minnesota, Michele Bachmann heeft namelijk de het nodige papierwerk en formulieren ingevuld om zo’n groep te starten in het Huis van Afgevaardigden. In een brief aan afgevaardigde Robert Brady, de Democratische voorzitter van de House Administration Committee, heeft Bachmann gevraagd om de groep te registreren voor het 111^de Congres.

Bachmann schrijft: “I would like to register the House Tea Party Caucus as a Congressional Member Organization for the 111th Congress. The House Tea Party Caucus will serve as an informal group of Members dedicated to promote Americans’ call for fiscal responsibility, adherence to the Constitution and limited government.” In de brief heeft Bachmann zichzelf alvast als voorzitter van de caucus benoemd. “The American people are speaking out loud and clear”, aldus Bachmann. “They have had enough of the spending, the bureaucracy, and the government knows best mentality running rampant today throughout the halls of Congress. This caucus will espouse the timeless principles of our founding, principles that all Members of Congress have sworn to uphold.”

Bachmann is niet de enige Tea Party gesteunde kandidaat die met het idee van een caucus speelt. Afgelopen week gaf Rand Paul, kandidaat voor de Senaat voor de staat Kentucky, tegenover de National Review aan dat, als hij gekozen wordt, hij hoopt samen te werken met gelijkgestemde conservatieven wat hij een “Tea Party Caucus” noemde. “I think I will be part of a nucleus with Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn, who are unafraid to stand up”, aldus Paul. “If we get another loud voice in there, like Mike Lee from Utah or Sharron Angle from Nevada, there will be a new nucleus.”

“In conversations my staff had with the Committee, some concerns were voiced that this caucus may face roadblocks due to the perceived political nature of the label ‘Tea Party'”, aldus Bachmann. “As Members of Congress, we have an obligation to represent the views of our constituents, and this Caucus would do nothing more than promote the timeless principles of our founding, principles that all Members of Congress have sworn to uphold.” Eerst moeten de “Tea Party kandidaten” nog gekozen worden en aangezien hun ideeën ver van het mainstream af staan wordt dat nog een hele klus. Zo’n aparte Tea Party groep zorgt wel voor leven in de brouwerij op de Hill. Wordt ongetwijfeld vervolgd.
