Fractievoorzitter van de Senaat, Harry Reid, die in een spannende verkiezing in Nevada van de conservatieve Sharron Angle won, zei afgelopen week dat hij samen wil werken met de Republikeinen en zei dat hij “is begging for Republican input.

Maar Reid bekritiseerde ook de GOP voor het blokkeren van veel plannen en wetsvoorstellen in de afgelopen 2 jaar. Reid gaf toe dat door de winst van de Republikeinen er een nieuwe realiteit is op Capitol Hill en dat er dient te worden samengewerkt. “I think that every piece of legislation that we passed had to jump through all the procedural hoops to do. Each one of those we could have improved the legislation with some Republican input, but they simply weren’t willing to work with us. That is where they came up with the designation of the party of no”, aldus Reid tijdens een persconferentie. “I have always felt that my job is to build consensus, to work out legislation. It’s not a bad word to suggest that legislation is the art of compromise. That is what it is. So I am going to do everything I can to do that.”

Gevraagd of de Democraten nu een rechtsere koers gaan varen om met de GOP samen te werken zei Reid: “I don’t think this is a question of right or left. It’s a question of doing the best thing for the American people.” Reid zei dat hij “serious Republican ideas” verwelkomt, maar bekritiseerde de Republikeinen ook voor het niet samenwerken aan wetten, zoals Wall Street reform.

“We’ve got to do something about these misleading polls that are all over the country. They are so unfair, and you just gobble them up no matter where they come from. You just run with them like they are the finest pastry in the world. They’re false and misleading, and people pay for those polls so you will use them”, aldus Reid in aanval op de media.
