Als hij dichterbij komt bij de beslissing of hij mee gaat doen aan de race om de presidentiële nominatie van de Republikeinen in 2012 te winnen, prees kandidaat Tim Pawlenty een potentiële andere kandidaat en rivaal, namelijk Sarah Palin.

Maar de voormalige gouverneur van Minnesota geeft wel aan dat hij niet bang is voor de Republikeinse ‘rock star’ en celebrity die veel bekender is. “I don’t think it’s fair to say people are afraid of her”, aldus Pawlenty tegenover “Nightline” van ABC. “It’s fair to say she is somebody who’s got a lot of influence and can use it for good, if she chooses to.”

Pawlenty, waar van verwacht dat hij meedoet, gaf toe dat hij veel minder bekend is dan Palin en zei dat hij “a long way to go to match the energy that Palin has harnessed” sinds ze vice-presidentkandidaat werd van John McCain in 2008. “I’ve got a long way to go to get people to even know my name, much less worrying about whether I could beat, you know, the force of nature that is Sarah Palin”, aldus Pawlenty daaraan toevoegend dat Palin “has the tools to to mount a competitive presidential bid.”

De opmerkingen van Pawlenty over Palin zijn positief in tegenstelling tot zijn opmerkingen over een andere potentiële kandidaat: afgevaardigde Michele Bachmann, ook uit Minnesota (zie bericht Nieuwe kandidaat?). “Well, it’s a free country. Anyone can run that’s over the age of 35”, aldus de voormalige gouverneur tegenover ”Politics Daily.” “I have respect for Michele Bachmann. I’ve had a cordial and positive relationship with her.” Pawlenty zei tegenover ABC dat hij zijn beslissing maakt in maart of april.
