John Boehner had nog nauwelijks de voorzittershamer van Nancy Pelosi overgenomen of er kwam al een waarschuwing van de Tea Party beweging voor Boehner. De theedrinkers schrijven namens Judson Phillips, oprichter van de Tea Party Nation, een Tea Party organisatie in Tennessee: “As you get down to work, there are a few things to remember. You did not become Speaker because America suddenly fell in love with you or the Republican Party. You became Speaker because America, led by the Tea Party, repudiated Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and the party of socialism.” De Tea Party activisten willen dat het Congres: “First, STOP SPENDING MONEY!”, aldus Phillips.

Phillips eindigt zijn brief aan Boehner dat hij twee keuzes heeft: “You can simply be a nice guy and compromise on legislation and the agenda. And you might not be speaker in two years. Or you can stand firm for a strong conservative agenda. If you fight, it will be a bloody fight, but when you look at the great leaders of the past, they did not compromise. They fought. What will it be? Do you have the Reagan in you?”

Phillips richtte de Tea Party Nation op in 2009 en heeft ongeveer 40.000 leden en is het best bekend voor het organiseren van de eerste National Tea Party conventie in Nashville, Tennessee in februari 2010.

De Republikeinen hebben, dankzij de sterke steun van Tea Party activisten, 63 zetels in het Huis gewonnen en daarmee de meerderheid.
