De beschuldigde schutter van het bloedbad in Arizona, Jared Lee Loughner, het vuur opende met een geweer met een magazijn waar 30 kogels in passen.

Sommige Democraten in het Congres zeggen nu dat soort wapens met deze magazijnen niet legaal verkrijgbaar moeten zijn en pleiten nu voor een verbod. Maar of dat haalbaar is, is twijfelachtig. “That enabled him to do the kind of damage that he did. There is no earthly reason for these weapons to have that kind of bullet capacity”, aldus de Democratische senator van New Jersey, Frank Lautenberg.

In 1994 tekende president Clinton een wet die er voor zorgde dat wapens, zoals Loughner gebruikte verboden werden. Maar de wet werd in 2004 afgeschaft. In 2000 zei presidentskandidaat Al Gore in zijn campagne dat hij “common sense gun safety measures” wilde.

“Gun control is probably not a winning issue”, aldus senator Patrick Leahy van Vermont, die bekend staat als een liberale politicus, maar voor wapenbezit is.

Vorig jaar pleitten Democraten in het Huis van Afgevaardigden om het District of Columbia stemrecht te geven, om zo te zorgen dat controle op wapens in de D.C. werd afgeschaft. “We are a pro-gun Congress, and have been for a while”, aldus een Democratische afgevaardigde.

De Republikeinse afgevaardigde Mike Rogers van Michigan, zegt dat wapens met deze magazijnen “are already out there” en een wet aannemen zal geen effect hebben. “Bad guys are going to get guns, they’re going to get clips and they’re going to do bad things because that’s what their intention is. We should not divert our attention from what the real problem was here. We had an individual who has expressed violent intent who clearly had some mental instability along the way”, aldus Rogers. “Getting into a debate – should it be three rounds or eight rounds or 30 rounds is irrelevant. The fact that they’re going to have access to firearms and we still have the second amendment in the United States”, aldus afgevaardigde van Michigan.

Gevraagd wat de kansen zijn dat een wapenwet wordt aangenomen door het Congres, antwoordde een Republikeinse afgevaardigde: “zero.”

De National Rifle Association (NRA) gaf geen commentaar op wapen regulatie en noemde het  “inappropriate.” De NRA gaf een verklaring uit waarin het zei: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this senseless tragedy, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords, and their families during this difficult time. We join the rest of the country in praying for the quick recovery of those injured.”
