Tijdens een gesloten bijeenkomst met zowel Democratische als Republikeinse gouverneurs deed president Obama er weinig aan om de Republikeinen, die veel van zijn plannen willen blokkeren, te overtuigen dat hij zich flexibel zak opstellen over hoe federale plannen in de staten moet worden uitgevoerd.

Tijdens een toespraak voor de bijeenkomst in het Witte Huis gaf Obama aan dat hij grote concessies wil doen in het nog steeds durende controversiële debat over de hervorming van de gezondheidszorg en hij omarmde een gezamenlijk voorstel dat de staten de kans biedt zich op te geven voor zogenoemde “innovation waivers” te beginnen in 2014, 3 jaar eerder dan de invoering van de originele gezondheidswet.

De Republikeinse gouverneurs zijn sceptisch over het voorstel. “Let’s see what the concessions are before we go too far. It wouldn’t be fair to me or them to comment on something I haven’t read when it is so critical what’s in the details”, aldus de gouverneur van Mississippi, Haley Barbour, tegenover journalisten tijdens de bijeenkomst van de National Governors Association (NGA). “The president was encouraging. The difference between what gets said and what gets done has to be resolved”, aldus Barbour.

De gouverneur van Kansas, Sam Brownback, zei dat de meeste Republikeinse gouverneurs “had fundamental philosophical objections to the health care law that will be difficult to overcome, no matter what compromises the White House puts forward.”

De gouverneur van Maryland, Martin O’Malley, de voorzitter van de Democratic Governors Association (DGA), verdedigde de president tegen alle kritiek en noemde de GOP gouverneurs “Tea Partying Republican governors.” “What I find almost comical is how they stand up and self righteously say, ‘Unlike some, we have to balance our budgets every year'”, aldus O’Malley, die opmerkte dat veel Republikeinse gouverneurs hun begroting vorig jaar in evenwicht wisten te brengen met geld van de overheid. “The states have only been able to balance their budgets because of the help that came from the federal government.”

“The president is playing politics”, zei de gouverneur van New Jersey, Chris Christie. “He is already getting ready for re-election. That’s fine. He has got to play to that base I remember during the campaign, he said that he would get his sneakers on and walk with union people. I haven’t seen him to do that yet.
