Er kwamen verschillende en uiteenlopende reacties van de Republikeinse kandidaten die mee doen aan de race om de GOP nominatie op het akkoord tussen het Witte Huis en het Congres om het schuldenplafond te verhogen en ruim 2,4 triljoen dollar te bezuinigen.

De voormalige gouverneur van Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, die zich de afgelopen weken afzijdig hield in het debat over de schuldencrisis, zei dat als hij president was een plan zou hebben dat “would have produced a budget that was cut, capped and balanced, that did not leave the door open to higher taxes and cuts to defense spending”, aldus Romney. “President Obama’s leadership failure has pushed the economy to the brink at the eleventh hour and the 59th minute”, aldus Romney in een verklaring. “I personally cannot support this deal.”

Afgevaardigde van Minnesota, Michele Bachmann, die al snel in het debat aangaf dat ze fel tegen het verhogen van het schuldenplafond was, zei dat president Obama “failed to lead and failed to provide a plan.” “The ‘deal’ he announced spends too much and doesn’t cut enough”, aldus Bachmann in een verklaring. “This isn’t the deal the American people ‘preferred’ either, Mr. President. Someone has to say no. I will.”

De voormalige gouverneur van Utah en ambassadeur in China, Jon Huntsman, was het oneens met zijn rivalen Romney en Bachmann en noemde het akkoord “a positive step toward cutting our nation’s crippling debt.” Huntsman zei dat hij het plan zal steunen van de zogenoemde super commissie die een plan moet presenteren over de bezuinigingen. In dat plan moeten “real cuts, entitlement reform, and revenue-neutral tax reforms – without any tax hikes” worden opgenomen, aldus Huntsman. “The Republican members of Congress deserve tremendous credit for moving this debate to the forefront and at long last beginning to get Washington in line”, aldus Huntsman in een verklaring.

“With so much work remaining to be done, this deal is yet another reminder of the urgent need to replace President Obama and his radical commitment to big government and higher taxes”, aldus de voormalige voorzitter van het Huis, Newt Gingrich in een verklaring. Gingrich kwam zelf met een plan om de schuldencrisis op te lossen dat zich concerteert op het creëren van banen en hij zei dat de nationale veiligheid en bezuinigingen zich niet lenen voor politieke spelletjes en dat de overheid drastisch moeten worden geherstructureerd.

Alex Conant, een woordvoerder van Tim Pawlenty, zei dat het akkoord “is nothing to celebrate.” “Only in Washington would the political class think it’s a victory when the government narrowly avoids default, agrees to go further into debt, and does little to reform a spending system that cannot be sustained by our children and grandchildren”, aldus Conant in een verklaring. “While no further evidence was needed, this entire debt ceiling fiasco demonstrates that President Obama must be replaced.”
