Tim Pawlenty neemt geen afstand van zijn kritiek op Michele Bachmann tijdens het Republikeinse debat in Iowa. Pawlenty zei dat het feit dat Bachmann een vrouw is geen invloed had op zijn woordkeuze.

Pawlenty werd in een forum van Politico gevraagd of het een vergissing was om een vrouwelijke kandidaat te bestoken in zulke sterke bewoordingen zei hij: “It’s not about gender, it’s about the issues.”

Pawlenty zei: “Representative Bachmann likes to assign herself the label of leader. Well if you’re going to be a leader, you have to be accountable for results.”

Pawlenty herhaalde zijn kritiek waaronder dat haar “claims of success in Congress didn’t match up to reality.” Pawlenty: “Everything she’s lead the charge against, she’s not accomplished. That’s not good enough to be the president of the United States. With respect, she’s done wonderful things in life, but we’re not going to have a nominee that’s someone who hasn’t achieved results. No one’s questioning her spine, they’re questioning her results”, aldus Pawlenty.

In het debat gebruikte Pawlenty dezelfde terminologie. “She has said she has a titanium spine. It’s not her spine we are worried about, it’s her record of results. If that’s your view of effective results, please stop. You’re killing us”, aldus Pawlenty.

De kritiek op Bachmann doet het debat oplaaien of er seksisme in het spel is, zoals in 2008 werd gesuggereerd dat Hillary Clinton de race om de nominatie verloor (onder andere) omdat ze een vrouw was en Sarah Palin als vice-presidentskandidaat geen kans maakte.
