De top strateeg van het herverkiezingscampagne team van president Obama, David Axelrod, gaf afgelopen week de schuld van de verlaging van de kredietwaardigheid van de VS door ratingbureau Standard & Poor’s (S&P) aan de Tea Party beweging die van de verhoging van het schuldenplafond een politiek onderwerp maakte.

“This is essentially a tea party downgrade”, aldus Axelrod in het programma “Face the Nation” van CBS. “The tea party brought us to the brink of a default.”

Axelrod, die eerder dit jaar het Witte Huis verliet om zich te richten op Obama’s campagne van 2012, zei dat de VS door de conservatieve Republikeinen naar de financiële afgrond is gebracht. “It was the wrong thing to do to push the country to that point. And it’s something that that should never have happened”, aldus Axelrod. “That clearly is on the backs of those who were willing to see the country default, those very strident voices in the tea party.”

De Republikeinse senator Lindsey Graham was het duidelijk oneens met Axelrod en zei dat door de voorstellen van leden van de Tea Party beweging juist een verlaging van de kredietwaardigheid door S&P had kunnen worden voorkomen.

“If we’d listened to the tea party, we’d have $4 trillion reductions in debt over time and not been downgraded”, aldus Graham in “Face the Nation.” “The tea party hasn’t destroyed Washington; Washington was destroyed before the tea party got there.”

Axelrod uitte ook kritiek op het beleid van S&P om de AAA status te verlagen naar een AA+ status. “They made an egregious analytical error here, but theirs was largely a political analysis, and that is what we should focus on”, aldus Axelrod over S&P. “We made some progress in the compromise that was struck on the debt. What we’re saying is we have to make more progress.”
