De Republikeinse gouverneur van New Jersey, Chris Christie, maakte afgelopen week bekend dat hij niet mee doet aan de race om de Republikeinse presidentiële nominatie in 2012.

Christie, die aan zijn eerste termijn als gouverneur bezig is, zei dat de druk op hem in de afgelopen maanden heeft geleid tot het feit dat hij serieus is gaan nadenken om mee te doen, ondanks dat hij steeds “nee” zei. Maar Christie zegt nu dat hij vast houdt aan zijn baan in de Garden State, zoals New Jersey ook wel wordt genoemd.

“Now is not my time. I have a commitment to New Jersey that I simply will not abandon”, aldus Christie tijdens een persconferentie in Trenton. “That’s the promise I made to the people of this state when I took office.”

Christie, die van alle kanten het advies kreeg om mee te doen om in het Witte Huis te komen besprak het met zijn familie, vrienden en medewerkers. “Now, having decided against a bid”, aldus Christie en zei dat hij “not feel any sense of regret at all.”

“I felt like it was my obligation as I said before given the seriousness and the amount of people who were coming to me and asking me to reconsider to reconsider and I did”, aldus Christie. “In the end I came back to the same place I was in the whole year.” Lees meer hier.
