De Affordable Care Act, beter bekend als Obamacare viert deze week zijn vierjarig bestaan. De fractievoorzitter van de Democraten in het Huis van Afgevaardigden, Nancy Pelosi, greep de gelegenheid aan op te zeggen dat de controversiële ziektekostenverzekering zorgt voor politieke schade voor de Democraten. Pelosi voorspelde dat de gezondheidswet Democratische politici helpt in districten die meedoen aan de tussentijdse verkiezingen in november. “I believe that it’s a winner”, aldus Pelosi. “That is a case we have to make” en voegde daar aan toe dat de Democraten eenzelfde dilemma hadden toe Social Security in de jaren ’30 werd aangenomen en zei “everybody has to spread the word as to what this is.” Hoewel Pelosi zei dat Democraten volledig achter de Affordable Care Act staan en wet steunen, zal het in de verkiezingscampagne draaien om economische onderwerpen. “We’re not running on this. President Obama zei afgelopen week dat hij denkt de Democraten een lage opkomst kunnen verwachten tijdens de tussentijdse verkiezingen en “get clobbered” vanwege de “toxic nature” van Washington. “The problem is not that the American people disagree with us on the issues”, aldus de president. “The challenge is, is that our politics in Washington have become so toxic that people just lose faith and finally they just say, ‘You know what, I’m not interested, I’m not going to bother, I’m not going to vote’ ”, aldus Obama.
