Obama spreekt met premier Oekraïne

The President Obama and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk of Ukraine speak to the press after a bilateral meeting to discuss finding a peaceful resolution to Russia’s ongoing military intervention in Crimea that would respect Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. The leaders also discussed support the international community can provide to help Ukraine confront its economic challenges, and the importance of uniting Ukraine and working to fulfill the aspirations of the Ukrainian people as they prepare for May presidential elections.

Afgelopen week vond de jaarlijkse Conservative Political Action Conference, beter bekent als CPAC, plaats. Elke conservatieve (lees: Republikeinse) politicus die er toe doet spreekt op de conferentie. Republikeinen voor Hillary

Als Hillary Clinton besluit om in 2016 mee te doen aan de race om het Witte Huis kan ze wel eens steun krijgen uit een hoek die je niet verwacht. Uit een peiling van The Pew Research Center/USA Today blijkt dat 8 procent van de Republikeinen op Clinton zou stemmen en zelfs 17 procent zegt dat er “some chance” is dat ze op Clinton zouden stemmen. Daarnaast zegt wel 74 procent dat ze absoluut niet op Clinton zouden stemmen. Lees meer hier.

Minimumloon prioriteit

President Obama heeft druk met de situatie in de Oekraïne en belde afgelopen week twee keer lang met president Poetin. Maar Obama vond afgelopen week ook tijd om het weer over de verhoging van het minimumloon naar 10,10 dollar per uur te hebben. Obama sprak in Connecticut en werd geflankeerd door gouverneurs van staten waar het minimumloon hoger is dan het landelijke minimumloon van 7,25 dollar. Obama plaatste zijn toespraak in een internationale context en zei dat mensen over de hele wereld vechten voor een ‘American-style’ kansen. “But we’ve got some work to do to match up our ideals with the reality that’s happening on the ground right now”, aldus Obama. Lees meer hier.

Republikeinen roepen hulp in van sociale media

De Republikeinen geloven dat ze de verkiezingen in 2012 hebben verloren om dat ze geen gebruik maakte van de laatste technologieën, vooral sociale media. Daarom roepen de Republikeinen nu de hulp in van de sociale media kanalen Facebook en Twitter om hun te adviseren hoe ze hun kansen kunnen vergroten om de verkiezingen in 2014 en 2016 wel te winnen. Tijdens de Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) spraken twee vertegenwoordigers van Twitter en Facebook met Republikeinse data en online specialisten om hun advies te geven over hoe ze data en sociale media kunnen gebruiken om kiezers te bereiken op hun telefoons en tablets. Lees meer hier.

Clinton vergelijkt Rusland met Nazi Duitsland

Hillary Clinton vergeleek in haar eerste reactie tot de crisis in de Oekraïne Rusland met Nazi Duitsland aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Clinton maakte de opmerkingen tijdens een bijeenkomst in Californië, terwijl Clinton tot nu toe zich niet mengde in buitenlandse politiek gevoelige onderwerpen. Clinton vergeleek president Vladimir Poetin ook met Adolf Hitler, maar legde later uit wat ze eigenlijk bedoelde te zeggen. Lees meer hier.
