Er is opnieuw onrust in de Republican National Committee (RNC) en bij Republikeinen, na controversiële uitspraken van de voorzitter van de RNC, Michael Steele. Een leidende en invloedrijke conservatieve redacteur riep Steele afgelopen week op om af te treden, maar de RNC verdedigde de uitspraken van Steele over de oorlogsinspanningen van de VS in Afghanistan en dat de oorlog wellicht niet gewonnen kan worden. “The Chairman clearly supports our troops but believes that success of the war effort in Afghanistan requires the ongoing support of the American people”, aldus de directeur communicatie van de RNC, Dough Heye. In een toespraak tijdens een Republikeinse bijeenkomst in Connecticut om geld op te halen, gaf Steele in een video op YouTube zijn visie op de oorlog in Afghanistan. “This was a war of Obama’s choosing. This is not something the United States actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in”, aldus Steele.

De verklaring van Steele is in tegenspraak met de visie van de NAVO troepenmacht, geleid door de VS, en de grote steun van de Amerikanen om Afghanistan binnen te vallen na de terroristische aanvallen van 11 september 2001. De uitspraken leidde er toe dat William Kristol, redacteur van de Weekly Standard, Steele op riep om af te treden. “There are, of course, those who think we should pull out of Afghanistan, and they’re certainly entitled to make their case. But one of them shouldn’t be the chairman of the Republican party”, aldus Kristol. Steele zei ook nog dat de oorlog misschien niet te winnen valt.

“Well if [Obama’s] such a student of history, has he not understood that that’s the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan. Alright? Because everyone who has tried over a thousand years of history, has failed. And there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan without committing more troops”, aldus Steele. Zijn uitspraken zijn niet alleen in strijd met de standpunt van de regering Obama, maar ook met de meeste Republikeinen in de GOP. Heye zei dat Steele een punt probeerde te maken dat “[t]he responsibility for building and maintaining that strategy falls squarely on the shoulders of the President.” “Like so many Americans, Chairman Steele wants to hear an explanation from President Obama on what his strategy is for winning the war in Afghanistan”, aldus de directeur communicatie. Heye maakte ook duidelijk dat “nowhere did Steele say or suggest that (a) we shouldn’t be there, (b) we can’t win or (c) he didn’t support the surge.”

Steele liet vervolgens een verklaring uit geven. “As we enter the Fourth of July weekend, I proudly remember standing with Maryland National Guardsmen on their way to the Middle East and later stood with the mothers of soldiers lost at war. There is no question that America must win the war on terror. During the 2008 Presidential campaign, Barack Obama made clear his belief that we should not fight in Iraq, but instead concentrate on Afghanistan. Now, as President, he has indeed shifted his focus to this region. That means this is his strategy. And, for the sake of the security of the free world, our country must give our troops the support necessary to win this war”, aldus Steele. “As we have learned throughout history, winning a war in Afghanistan is a difficult task. We must also remember that after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, it is also a necessary one.”

Maar de verklaring van Steele leek niet echt te helpen om de onrust te bezweren. Een andere prominente conservatieve Republikein, Liz Cheney, dochter van voormalig vice-president Dick Cheney, riep ook om het aftreden van Steele en noemde zijn uitspraken over de oorlog in Afghanistan “deeply disappointing and wrong.” In een verklaring liet Cheney weten dat ze vindt dat Steele op moet stappen. “RNC Chairman Michael Steele’s comments about the war in Afghanistan were deeply disappointing and wrong”, aldus Cheney. “The chairman of the Republican party must be unwavering in his support for American victory in the war on terror – a victory that cannot be accomplished if we do not prevail in Afghanistan. I endorse fully Bill Kristol’s letter to Chairman Steele. It is time for Chairman Steele to step down.”

Cheney, de oprichtster van de organisatie Keep America Safe, een conservatieve organisatie die zich richt op de nationale veiligheid en buitenlands politiek beleid, is dus niet de eerste die om het aftreden van Steele roept. Eerder al riep William Kristol van de Weekly Standard dat Steele op moet stappen. Kristol kreeg bijval van voormalige voorzitter van de Republikeinse partij in South Carolina, Katon Dawson, die als tweede eindigde achter Steele in de race om het voorzitterschap van de RNC. Ook senator John McCain uitte scherpe kritiek op de voorzitter van de Republican National Committee en noemde de uitspraken van Steele over de oorlog “wildly inaccurate.” In een interview in het programma “This Week” van ABC zei McCain dat er geen excuses zijn voor de opmerkingen van Steele dat de oorlog, die voormalige president George W. Bush is begonnen, “of (President Barack) Obama’s choosing” en misschien niet te winnen is. “I think that Mr. Steele is going to have to assess whether he can still lead the Republican Party as chairman of the Republican National Committee”, aldus McCain.
