Als Newt Gingrich besluit mee te doen aan de race om de Republikeinse nominatie in 2012 te winnen en het tegen Barack Obama wil opnemen is hij bij voorbaat kansloos, althans dat zegt zijn ex-vrouw. “There’s no way”, aldus Marianne Gingrich tegenover Esquire Magazine dat een portret maakte van de voormalige voorzitter van het Huis van Afgevaardigden. “He could have been president. But when you try and change your history too much, and try and recolor it because you don’t like the way it was or you want it to be different to prove something new … you lose touch with who you really are. You lose your way.”

Gingrich’s ex-vrouw, die van 1981 tot 1999 getrouwd was met hem, vindt wel dat hij de juiste mentaliteit heeft om een poging te doen om in het Witte Huis te komen, ook al is dat kansloos. “He believes that what he says in public and how he lives don’t have to be connected”, aldus Marianne. ”If you believe that, then yeah, you can run for president.” Marianne zegt ook dat haar voormalige echtgenoot “is a self-conscious man who grew up poor and always wanted to be somebody, to make a difference, to prove himself.” “He has to be historic to justify his life”, aldus Gingrich’s ex-vrouw tegenover Esquire.
