Na aanleiding van de schietpartij in Tucson, Arizona, waar de Democratische afgevaardigde Gabrielle Giffords zwaar gewond raakte gaat de discussie over het politieke klimaat in de VS. Vervolgens doken de media op het nieuws wie Giffords is en waar ze voor staat.

Na aanleiding hiervan komt het district dat Giffords vertegenwoordigt op een website voor met de titel “take back the 20” als onderdeel van een lijst die oorspronkelijk werd gelanceerd door Sarah Palin van kwetsbare Democratische afgevaardigden in 20 districten. Een kaart op de website laat schietviziers zien over de Democratische districten, waaronder het district van Giffords.

Palin lanceerde de lijst voor het eerst in maart 2010, waarin ze 20 afgevaardigden van het Huis noemde die voor de hervorming van de gezondheidszorg stemde en die districten die John McCain won tijdens de presidentsverkiezingen in 2008. Giffords werd in 2006 voor het eerst gekozen en werd afgelopen november herkozen. Ze is een gematigde Democraat.

Het artikel van Palin op de website gaf aan dat deze races gewonnen moeten worden. “We’ll aim for these races and many others. “This is just the first salvo in a fight to elect people across the nation who will bring common sense to Washington” en kwam met een kaart met schietviziers die stonden over de districten. Giffords reageerde op de kaart en zei tegenover MSNBC dat haar collega’s “had never seen anything like it.” “The thing is, the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district”, aldus Giffords in maart toen. “When people do that, they’ve got to realize there’s consequences to that action.”

Nadat Giffords afgelopen weekend werd neergeschoten in Tucson, reageerde Palin via haar Facebook pagina op het incident. “My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shootings in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.”

Tijdens een persconferentie zei de sheriff van het district, Clarence Dupnik, dat sommige mensen “living off inflaming the American public.” “When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government, the anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous”, aldus Dupnik. “Unfortunately, Arizona has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry.” En de discussie gaat nu over het vergiftigde politieke klimaat in Amerika. De aanslag op Giffords staat niet op zichzelf. De dag nadat ze voor de wet voor de hervorming van de gezondheidszorg stemde werden de ruiten van haar kantoor in Tucson ingegooid.

Giffords won met een kleine overwinning van de Republikeinse Jesse Kelly in november. Kelly werd gesteund door de Tea Party beweging en kreeg daardoor 47 procent van de stemmen en Giffords kreeg 49 procent. Het 8^ste district dat overwegend Republikeins is ging in 2000 en 2004 met de verkiezingen naar George W. Bush.

De voorzitster van de Tea Party Express, Amy Kremer, reageerde op de aanslag en liet weten dat de organisatie was “shocked and saddened by the terrible tragedy.” “These heinous crimes have no place in America, and they are especially grievous when committed against our elected officials. Spirited debate is desirable in our country, but it only should be the clash of ideas”, aldus Kremer in een verklaring. “An attack on anyone for political purposes, if that was a factor in this shooting, is an attack on the democratic process. We join with everyone in vociferously condemning it.”
