Voorzitter van het Huis John Boehner maakte afgelopen week bekend dat het Huis van Afgevaardigden nadenkt over een wet die verbiedt dat een abortus wordt vergoed. Boehner noemde zo’n wet “one of our highest legislative priorities.” “A ban on taxpayer funding of abortions is the will of the people and it ought to be the will of the land”, aldus Boehner in een persconferentie op Capitol Hill.

Boehner werd gevraagd waarom de Republikeinen van een sociaal onderwerp als abortus zo’n grote prioriteit maken, terwijl de Republikeinen zeiden dat ze de focus op economische onderwerpen zou leggen. Maar Boehner zegt dat hij de belofte nakomt die de GOP vorig jaar deed. “Our members feel strongly about the sanctity of human life. We listened to the American people, we made a commitment to the American people in our Pledge to America and we’re continuing to fulfill our commitment”, aldus Boehner.

De Republikeinen in het Huis ontvouwde hun agenda en beleid in de vorm van de “Pledge to America”, waarbij de nadruk lag op het creëren van banen en fiscale verantwoordelijk (= minder geld uitgeven). Maar om sociale conservatieve kiezers tegemoet te komen werd er een sectie opgenomen waar iets over abortus stond. “Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to using tax dollars to pay for abortion, and the executive order issued by President Obama in conjunction with congressional passage of the health care law is inadequate to ensure taxpayer funds are not used in this manner.” Lees meer hier.
