De voorzitster van de landelijke Tea Party beweging, de Tea Party Express, herhaalde dat de reactie van Michele Bachmann op de State of the Union van president Obama niet is bedoeld om te concurreren met de officiële reactie afgevaardigde Paul Ryan namens de GOP.

Voorzitster Amy Kremer zei tegenover CNN dat “the peoples’ voices need to be heard and that the Tea Party is not a wing of the Republican Party!” Een email van de Tea Party Express naar journalisten kopte “Bachmann to counter Barack Obama – TONIGHT!” Maar er kwam kritiek op de reactie van Bachmann. “This has absolutely nothing to do with Paul Ryan”, aldus Kremer. “It may not be personal with Ryan”, maar het is duidelijk dat de Tea Party Express een reactie wilde geven los van de GOP. 

Kremer zei dat ze Bachmann in november of december is benaderd om namens de Tea Party beweging te spreken en dat ze meteen enthousiast was. De Tea Party Express wilde iemand die dicht bij de Tea Party beweging staat. “This has to do with the Tea Party movement, and our supporters – and who have aligned themselves with the Tea Party movement”, aldus Kremer.

Kremer noemde Bachmann “an obvious choice”, gegeven haar populariteit bij de Tea Party activisten en de door haar opgerichte eerste Tea Party Caucus in het Huis van Afgevaardigden, waar Bachmann voorzitter van is. En de boodschap is duidelijk. “Our focus is to bring conservatives to Washington. Not Republicans”, aldus Kremer.
