De Republikeinse senator van Tennessee, Lamar Alexander, zei afgelopen week dat zakenman Donald Trump “absolutely no chance of winning” heeft om het presidentschap te winnen in een interview met CNN. Alexander en de voormalige gouverneur van New Mexico, Bill Richardson, spraken in het programma “State of the Union” van CNN over de potentiële kandidaten voor het presidentschap in 2012 en Alexander ging in op de GOP nominatie.

“There’s always someone like Donald Trump who has absolutely no chance of winning”, aldus Alexander. “He’s famous for being famous.” De senator van Tennessee zei: “There are only two to three people on either side who have any real chance to be president of the United States. And for him, the contest depends who has the capacity and ability to be President of the United States. So Tim Pawlenty has a much better chance than Donald Trump of being the Republican nominee”, aldus Alexander.

Alexander verdeelde de GOP kandidaten ook in twee kampen. De kandidaten die een kans hebben om mee te doen, vanwege onder andere geld, en de kandidaten die nog twijfelen. “Mitt Romney is most likely to run and is clearly someone who has the ability to do it”, aldus de senator. “But, there are others who could but they haven’t indicated they’re sure to run, like Mike Huckabee, Mitch Daniels, Haley Barbour, Governor Pawlenty. And then you’ve got Newt with the force of his ideas, and Sarah Palin with the force of her personality.”

Alexander beschreef het veld met alle potentiële kandidaten als “a pretty interesting primary.” “It will boil down to two or three and basically it will be the ones who are willing to start and finish.” Alexander zei dat “any incumbent president is formidable”, maar waarschuwde dat president Obama geen makkelijke weg heeft naar een eventuele herverkiezing. “I wouldn’t assume there won’t be a primary challenge…this is a lot harder than it looks”, aldus Alexander.

Richardson, die zelf een poging deed om de presidentiële nominatie te winnen in 2008, maar al snel afhaakte, zei dat Obama’s grootste tegenstand komt van een zogenoemde “dark horse candidate that is strong with their conservative base.” Richardson zei dat de GOP kandidaten “haven’t started out well” en zei dat senator van South Dakota, John Thune, een tegenstander van Obama zou kunnen zijn. Maar Thune heeft al aangegeven niet mee te doen.

Richardson dacht aan zijn eigen campagne en zei dat de helft van de campagne opgaat aan het ophalen van geld, fundraising. “I asked my campaign manager, David Contarino, what were the six steps we needed to take before we made the run. And three out of six were can we raise the money to do it. So that’s a big factor. Secondly, do you have it within you to go through two years of very intensive personal and professional trials and tribulations running for president? Third, do you have a theme?” Richardson zei dat een kandidaat de mogelijk moet hebben “to stand out.” er moet iets specials zijn. “And then lastly, where do you fit in within the current crop?”, aldus Richardson.
