De voormalige Republikeinse senator Rick Santorum, die nadenkt of hij een poging gaat wagen om presidentskandidaat te worden in 2012 voor de GOP, zei afgelopen week dat hij “is disgusted” met de Republican National Committee (RNC), dat geld van donoren gebruikte voor een avond in een nachtclub annex stripclub in Hollywood. Santorum sprak tegen een lokale Republikeinse groep in Council Bluffs, Iowa, zijn tweede toespraak in de Hawkeye staat en de staat waar de eerste caucus plaats vindt. Santorum uitte kritiek op RNC voorzitter Michael Steele en suggereerde dat er een “absence of leadership at the RNC.” “There is no excuse for people’s contributions to the RNC to go to pay for this behaviour”, aldus Santorum. “Frankly, I’m disgusted by it.”

De RNC zit met de kwestie in zijn maag, heeft de stafmedewerker ontslaan en zegt dat het geld wordt terug gegeven aan de donoren. Hoe dan ook, Santorum bekritiseerde Steele dat het incident überhaupt kon gebeuren. “As a leader, you set the tone for your organization. If somebody who worked for my organization did something like this, they would be out of a job. It’s not just that this happened; it’s that someone saw this reimbursement and then approved of it”, aldus Santorum. “Chairman Steele might not have had personal knowledge about this sort of activity, but if that’s the case, there is an absence of leadership at the RNC.” Michael Steele ligt al langer onder vuur. Steeds duiken er incidenten op, zoals onlangs een PowerPoint waarbij Democraten als president Obama en Nancy Pelosi als stripfiguren warden afgebeeld (zie bericht Democraten als stripfiguren) waarbij men zich afvraagt of Steele hiervan af wist en of hij wel weet en controle heeft wat zich binnen de RNC afspeelt.
