Over 10 weken zijn de tussentijdse verkiezingen voor het Congres en analisten verwachten dat de Republikeinen veel zetels gaan winnen. Maar strategen en analisten zeggen dat er een aantal belangrijke punten zijn die de GOP moet doen om de Amerikaanse kiezer te overtuigen om op hen te stemmen en zo de meerderheid in het Congres te krijgen.

1. Focus je op banen, banen en banen 

Ron Christie, een Republikeinse strateeg die werkte voor voormalig president George W. Bush, zegt dat de Republikeinen gebruik moeten maken van het feit dat de Democraten veel energie in ander zaken hebben gestoken dan in banen. “I think Republicans are poised to make significant gains in the House, if not outright control, and bolster their significant minority status in the Senate by talking about one thing, and that’s jobs”, aldus Christie. “And within the jobs mantra, it’s how they would strengthen the economy.” Christie zegt dat de zittende Republikeinen moeten uitleggen dat de “keys to the car” bij hun in goede handen is en dat ze “be given the chance to drive the cars of government once again.”

2. Word de partij van oplossingen, niet van “no”

De Democraten hebben gedurende de politieke debatten in het Congres de Republikeinse partij afgeschilderd als de “party of no” en de “party of obstruction”, de partij die tegen alles is (lees: de Democratische plannen en voorstellen). De Republikeinen zeggen dat ze proberen er voor te zorgen dat de radicale Democratische agenda niet wordt uitgevoerd. “One of the biggest challenges for Republicans heading into November is that they need to be the party of ideas”, aldus Mark Preston, politiek redacteur van CNN. “They just can’t be the party of obstruction…but to also offer solutions to some of the problems that are facing the nation.” Christie zegt dat om kiezers te winnen de GOP moet “rebuild the breach of trust” die ze verloren hebben onder de regering Bush en dat ze problemen kunnen oplossen.

3. Blijf denken aan de toekomst

Kevin Madden, een Republikeinse strateeg, merkt op dat de Republikeinen vooral naar de toekomst moet kijken als ze campagne voeren. “Fundamentally, every midterm election is a contest about the future, what you’re going to do, what the next day’s going to look like”, aldus Madden tegenover “Fox News Sunday.” “And whether or not the voters want to see a relitigation of the past at a time where they are obviously very angry about the present and not too hopeful about the future is a very big mistake.” Christie geeft aan dat het beleid over de wet over de gezondheidszorg een belangrijk punt is. “Just saying no to health insurance is not the way forward for Republicans in this election.” Met andere woorden, kom met alternatieven.

4. De aanval is de beste verdediging

De fractievoorzitter van de Republikeinen in de Senaat, Mitch McConnell, is de eerste van de GOP toegeeft dat zijn partij in de aanval is deze verkiezingen en hij is er van overtuigt dat de Republikeinen winnen in november. “The American public has taken a look at this administration”, aldus McConnell in het programma “Meet The Press” van NBC. “They think it’s spending too much, borrowing too much, taking over too much of the private sector and now raising taxes on top of it. … There are 70 some odd days between now and the election. I’m optimistic.” De Republikeinse partij was in 2009 op sterven na dood, met geen leider en de partij zat in een diepe crisis, aldus Preston. Maar de zaken veranderde snel. De Republikeinen waren de “first glue to try to pull the party back together and that was their opposition to the stimulus. And from there, they were able to build upon that”, aldus Preston.

5. Bied (opnieuw) een “Contract with a America” Part II aan

De voormalige Republikeinse voorzitter van het Huis, Newt Gingrich, krijgt de credits voor het feit dat de Republikeinen de controle over het Congres kregen na de tussentijdse verkiezingen in 1994. Zijn “Contract with America”, een set van partij principes en oplossingen, sloeg aan de bij de kiezer. Het is iets wat de Republikeinen opnieuw aan de man moeten brengen, aldus Christie. “Republicans need to articulate why they should be given the trust and the responsibility to drive the course of the nation. I think if there are five or 10 specific areas that, if given the trust, the Republicans would do and would enact within an amount of time, I think that would be very strong because people could look very clearly and delineate what the Republican message and what the Republicans platform is expressed to be”, aldus Christie.

6. Omarm de Tea Party aanhang, maar wees voorzichtig

De Tea Party is geen officiële politieke partij, maar het is wel een duidelijk zichtbare en invloedrijke beweging. Het maakt zich druk over de uitgaven van de overheid en het groeiende begrotingstekort, traditioneel conservatieve onderwerpen. McConnell zei dat de Tea Party beweging “extremely helpful” is en het “has produced a lot of energy in our primaries and I think it’s going to produce victories in November.” Maar Preston waarschuwt de Republikeinen dat ze voorzichtig met de Tea Party beweging moeten omgaan, omdat de beweging “really prides itself on being very independent and not tied to Washington.” “While Republicans need to embrace them, they can’t try to pull them in into their wings and have them be their soldiers heading into November.”

7. Vermijd sociale onderwerpen

In een jaar waar de economie onderwerp nummer 1 is, zeggen analisten dat de Republikeinen het niet moeten hebben over zaken, zoals het homohuwelijk, onderwerpen die het altijd goed doen bij kiezers van de GOP. Dit jaar, zijn de kiezers en de basis van de partij vol energie om het Congres weer in handen te krijgen. R. Clarke Cooper, directeur van de Log Cabin Republicans, een homo en lesbische groep binnen de GOP, zegt dat de Republikeinen “should be consistently maintaining a general drumbeat of messaging on core conservative principles of individual liberty, individual responsibility, free-market economy, tax reform, strong national defense and a confident foreign policy” en niet echt moeten ingaan op het debat over het homohuwelijk.

8. Trek onafhankelijke kiezers aan

Onafhankelijke kiezers worden gezien als de kiezers die in 2008 Barack Obama in het Witte Huis hielpen. Maar er is veel verandert sindsdien. Peilingen laten zien dat onafhankelijke kiezers zich afkeren van Obama en de Democraten. Het winnen van independents is van vitaal belang. “The Republicans know that independents were an absolutely critical partner to Obama in the presidential election in 2008”, aldus Jacqueline Salit, voorzitter van de website independentvoting.org, een nationaal strategie en organisatie centrum voor onafhankelijke kiezers. “So there’s a lot of energy going into trying to peel independents away and turn them back to center-right”, aldus Salit.

9. Opereer zo als Bill Clinton

Wellicht verrassend, maar Christie en de Republikeinen moeten opereren, zoals voormalig president Bill Clinton. Clinton’s optimisme en liefde voor de VS is iets wat de Republikeinen moeten laten zien tijdens de campagne. “President Clinton was very much a strong supporter of this country. He loved this country. He clearly connected with the constituents that elected him”, aldus Christie. “You contrast that with a president who seems self-pitying; who seems to loathe political opposition; who seems to be in a position that ‘I’m somehow above the fray and that these are my policies, take ‘em or leave ‘em’ “, aldus Christie.

10. Gebruik de schuld van Bush in je voordeel

Obama is onlangs weer begonnen om de regering Bush de schuld te geven van de huidige economische situatie. Republikeinen zijn in gegaan op die kritiek en zeggen dat een partij niet naar zijn eigen fouten en beleid kijkt. Peilingen laten zien dat Bush nog steeds impopulair is onder de Amerikaanse bevolking, Republikeinen kunnen het feit dat alles de schuld van Bush is tegen de Democraten gebruiken. “I think rather than Republicans playing defense or speaking about President Bush or President Bush’s record, they need to say that Democrats aren’t willing to talk about moving forward. And we are”, aldus Christie. “And the longer that they dwell on the past, it shows that they are not up to the task of leading us forward in these difficult times.”
