Om het vertrouwen van een meerderheid te krijgen is moeilijke opgave, maar helemaal als je een politicus bent. In de Verenigde Staten lukte het Barack Obama om de meerderheid te krijgen en werd daardoor de eerste zwarte president van de VS. Maar als er een religie in het spel is, namelijk de Islam, dat meer dan een miljard volgelingen heeft is het nog lastiger. Maar president Obama probeerde afgelopen week in een toespraak die door het Witte Huis werd omgeschreven als een erg belangrijk, het vertrouwen van de Moslim wereld te winnen. “Obama hopes to start a new chapter of engagement between the United States and the Muslim world”, aldus speechschrijver Ben Rhodes aan het begin van de rondreis van Obama door het Midden-Oosten en Europa. “This engagement would be based on mutual respect and mutual interest” en Obama sprak “openly and candidly” over onderwerpen als democratie, het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict en onderwerpen dat hebben gezorgd voor “tensions in the Muslim world”, aldus Rhodes. “This can’t be just [about] what we’re against, but what we’re for.”

President Obama sprak tijdens zijn toespraak op de universiteit van Cairo in Egypte over de spanning tussen de VS en moslims en zei “the weeping change brought by modernity and globalization led many Muslims to view the West as hostile to the traditions of Islam” en hij riep op tot een nieuw begin tussen de Arabische/Moslim wereld en de Westerse wereld. “Violent extremists have exploited these tensions in a small but potent minority of Muslims. The attacks of September 11, 2001, and the continued efforts of these extremists to engage in violence against civilians has led some in my country to view Islam as inevitably hostile”, aldus Obama. Obama herhaalde een punt dat hij ook in april maakte toen hij op bezoek was in Turkije. “In Ankara, I made clear that America is not — and never will be — at war with Islam. We will, however, relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security. Because we reject the same thing that people of all faiths reject: the killing of innocent men, women and children.”

Tijdens zijn toespraak quote Obama passages uit de Koran en de Bijbel en sprak hij over de rechten en plichten van de Islam, de legitieme rechten van Israel en de Palestijnen, de nucleaire ambities van Iran, de oorlogen in Irak en Afghanistan, maar ook over vrouwenrechten, economische ontwikkeling, religie en democratie in de Moslim wereld.

Op het gebied van democratie zei Obama: “Freedom of speech and religion are human rights and should be promoted and protected as such, but democracy should not be imposed onto one nation by another”, aldus Obama. “No system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other. That does not lessen my commitment, however, to governments that reflect the will of the people. Each nation gives life to this principle in its own way, grounded in the traditions of its own people.” Op het gebied van religie zei de president: “Among some Muslims, there’s a disturbing tendency to measure one’s own faith by the rejection of somebody else’s faith.” Hillary Clinton, de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, was ook aanwezig en zij heeft zich altijd ingezet voor de rechten van vrouwen en daar zei Obama over: “I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal, but I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality”, aldus de president. Over economie zei Obama: “I know that for many, the face of globalization is contradictory. The Internet and television can bring knowledge and information, but also offensive sexuality and mindless violence into the home. Trade can bring new wealth and opportunities, but also huge disruptions and change in communities.”

“I know there are many — Muslim and non-Muslim — who question whether we can forge this new beginning”, aldus Obama. Hij benadrukte dat “it is easier to start wars than to end them. It is easier to blame others than to look inward, to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. We will, however, relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security — because we reject the same thing that people of all faiths reject: the killing of innocent men, women, and children.
