President Barack Obama zei afgelopen week dat de toekomst van Egypte in de handen van de Egyptenaren ligt en dat er meerdere opties zijn dan de huidige situatie of de Moslim Broederschap.

In een interview dat werd uitgezonden voor de Super Bowl (overigens gewonnen door de Greenbay Packers), zei Obama dat de Moslim Broederschap slechts één factor is in Egypte. “They don’t have majority support in Egypt, but they are well organized and there are strains of their ideology that are anti-U.S.”, aldus Obama tegenover Bill O’Reilly van Fox News. “(But) there are a whole bunch of secular folks in Egypt, there are a whole bunch of educators and civil society in Egypt that want to come to the fore as well.”

Obama zei dat hij vertrouwen heeft dat Egypte een ordelijk overgangsproces kan hebben dat leidt tot een ‘representatieve’ regering en “we can work with together as a partner.” Obama noemde niet het wordt democratie of een ander soort basis waarop een regering werkt. Hij benadrukt wel dat de regering de wil van het volk moet respecteren en Obama is er tussen ook achter dat het tijdperk Mubarak over is. De president van de VS zegt het niet met zoveel woorden, maar tussen de regels door is het duidelijk te lezen. Maar een uitspraak uit Washington D.C. wordt aandachtig bestudeerd en de woorden worden zorgvuldig gekozen. President Hosni Mubarak is nu opgestapt.

Hoewel de crisis in Egypte veel van Obama’s aandacht opeist herhaalde Obama het thema van zijn State of the Union en dat hij gefocust is “to win the future”, maar dat betekent niet dat hij “is moving to the center.” “I’m the same guy and my practical focus, my common sense focus right now is how do we out-innovate, out-educate, out-build, out-compete the rest of the world”, aldus de president. “How do we create jobs in the United States of America, how do we make sure that businesses are thriving, but how do we also make sure that ordinary Americans can live out the American dream because right now they don’t feel like they are”, aldus Obama.
