De Republikeinse senator van Kentucky en potentiële kandidaat voor de presidentverkiezingen voor 2016, Rand Paul, waarschuwt dat zijn partij niet opnieuw een Republikein in het Witte Huis zal krijgen, tenzij de partij verandert.

“I think Republicans will not win again in my lifetime for the presidency unless they become a new GOP, a new Republican Party”, aldus Paul in een interview. “And it has to be a transformation, not a little tweaking at the edges.”

Paul zei dat de Republikeinse partij een “betere boodschap” moet hebben die alle mensen aanspreekt “in a way they can understand it.” Paul zegt dat hij bijvoorbeeld met jongeren spreekt over burgerlijke vrijheden in plaats van over belastingen.

“Republicans haven’t gone to African-Americans or to Hispanics and said, ‘You know what? The war on drugs, Big Government, has had a racial outcome. It’s disproportionately affected the poor and the black and brown among us’”, aldus de senator van Kentucky.

De geruchten over eventuele deelname aan de presidentsverkiezingen van 2016 en dat hij de persoon is die het Witte Huis voor de Republikeinen terug kan winnen noemde Paul “too early.” Hij herhaalde zijn frequente boodschap dat de Republikeinen meer Amerikanen moeten aanspreken.

“There is a struggle going on within the Republican Party”, aldus Paul. “It’s not new, and I’m not ashamed of it. I’m proud of the fact that there is a struggle. And I will struggle to make the Republican Party a different party, a bigger party, a more diverse party, and a party that can win national elections again.”

Een oplossing voor de strijd binnen de Republikeinen partij en dat een antwoord kan geven is wellicht een derde partij. Rand Paul acht die kans echter onwaarschijnlijk.

“I think that also you can transform a party, there have been transformations. The parties have switched places many times throughout history”, aldus de senator. “I’ve been there, and [have] worked for a third party candidate, a guy that was my dad. It’s very difficult. The laws are set against you.”

De Republikeinse partij moet veranderen. De laatste twee presidentsverkiezingen won president Obama met overmacht van respectievelijk John McCain en Mitt Romney. Het grootste probleem was daarbij dat de Republikeinen niet de stem van de jonge kiezers, zwarte kiezers en de steeds grotere groep Latino kiezers wisten te winnen. Of de Republikeinse partij echt snel zal veranderen moet de toekomst uit wijzen, feit is wel dat de partij in de afgelopen jaren wel meer naar rechts is opgeschoven.
