Schande
Het debat over de sluiting van de overheid, de zogenoemde ‘government shutdown’, wordt steeds grimmiger. De Republikeinse afgevaardigde van New York, Peter King, zei dat zijn Republikeinse collega in de senaat, senator van Texas, Ted Cruz, “is a fraud who will no longer have any influence in the Republican Party”, na dat het Huis van Afgevaardigden voor een motie stemde dat kan leiden tot een sluiting van de overheid op 30 september. Gevecht om afschaffen Obamacare
Met een andere stemming stemde het door de Republikeinen geleide Huis van Afgevaardigden voor een nieuwe poging om iets aan de uitgaven te doen. De stemming kan leiden tot een sluiting van de overheid, omdat beide partijen geen stap dichterbij een oplossing komen. Het is een déjà vu van de zomer van 2011. Het Huis stemde met 230 voor en 189 stemmen tegen voor een uitgavenplan van de overheid dat er voor zorgt dat er geen overheidsgeld gaat naar Obamacare. Lees meer hier.
Bananenrepubliek
President Obama waarschuwde afgelopen week dat een sluiting van de overheid er voor zorgt dat het economische herstel van Amerika een halt wordt toe geroepen. Tijdens een bijeenkomst in een Ford fabriek zei Obama dat “our recovery still needs to build more strength.” “Right now the debate that is going on in Congress is not meeting the test of helping middle class families”, aldus de president. “It is just – they are not focused on you. They are focused on politics. They are focused on trying to mess with me. They are not focused on you”, aldus Obama. Lees meer hier.
Paul: “Democraten krijgen wat ze willen”
De senator van Kentucky, Rand Paul, die een vurig tegenstander is van Obamacare, zei dat 
het zeer onwaarschijnlijk is dat de Republikeinen in het Congres er voor zorgen dat de gezondheidswet van president Obama, de Affordable Care Act, niet door gaat. “We probably can’t defeat or get rid of Obamacare”, aldus Paul tegenover journalisten. Paul zei dat het besluit van het Huis om de financiering van Obamacare tegen te houden niet wordt aangenomen in de Senaat. Maar Paul hoopt dat er nog aan de Affordable Care Act geschaft kan worden zodat er een programma komt “that’s less bad.” President Obama heeft al gezegd dat hij niets aan de wet zal veranderen. Clinton: “Geen idee of Hillary mee doet”
Televisiezender CNN sprak met voormalig president Bill Clinton over zijn vrouw als 
voormalig minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, haar populariteit en of ze van plan is om opnieuw een poging te wagen om in het Witte Huis te komen in 2016. “These polls don’t mean much now. We’re a long way ahead. I think she would be the first to tell you that there is no such thing as a done deal, ever, by anybody. But I don’t know what she’s going to do”, aldus Clinton. Republicans in Congress are so focused on undermining President Obama and his health care law that they are willing to risk the economic wellbeing of the US and world economies unless they get exactly what they want. The GOP plan to either shut down the government or default on the US government’s obligations is reckless and would be disastrous for the American people. Following a House GOP meeting earlier today where John Boehner and Eric Cantor acquiesced to the demands of the Tea Party and released a legislative plan that puts us on the path to a government shutdown, the DNC released a new web video “Shutdown & Default: The Politics of the Right.” The video highlights how for years Republicans have manufactured economic crises to try to get what they want. “Americans know that the GOP’s plans to shut down the government or default would hurt the US and world economy. We saw what happened when Republican brinkmanship triggered government shutdowns in 1995 and 1996 and how the Republicans’ recklessness in 2011 triggered the first credit downgrade in US history,” said DNC Press Secretary Michael Czin. “It’s high time that Republicans end their brinkmanship, and join with the President and Democrats in Congress to pass a budget that helps put people to work, grows our economy and strengthens the middle class.
